Miami based artist who’s work centers on science and nature, Joel is curiously unique voice for our age. In his free time, he enjoys sharpening his language skills or learning something new.
Do you feel like being an artist has defined you as a person with passion?
No, actually, being an artist is a by-product of my passionate nature. It’s the best profession for it.
At what age did you know that you were in fact an artist?
26. I’ve been drawing since diaper days but it took a while to really sink in.
Where do you derive your inspiration from?
Definitely the natural world and observing odd human behavior.
Describe the feeling of not knowing what next to create, and you're process to break through the block?
Unless you always are able to create.... I don’t really worry about that. I have whole libraries of planned artworks in my journals and sketchbooks. I just hope I live a very long time to get to them all.
When do you hold on to your vision and when do you compromise your vision to work with others?
When appropriate. The trick is you have to disengage your emotions. You may be helping making it but it’s not really your baby. Although I make my opinions known.
What is the view outside your window?
A partly cloudy Miami sky.
What is the best food combination possible?
Oooooohh, don’t make me choose!
What trend would bring back to life?
Being a gentleman, I mean really inhabiting the role!
What are you most proud of?
Is success in the process or in the result?
Both. A look back on your hard work can be just as gratifying as the golden statue is.
